Literary gossip on Mulk Raj Anand from Khushwant Singh....
Expand
Khushwant Singh reviews MULK RAJ ANAND SELECTED SHORT STORIES Edited with introduction by Saros Cowasjee Penguin Pages: 262; Rs: 250 in Outlook (July 31) . Plenty of gossip - Khushwant Ishtyle. Call it first hand gossip for Khushwant knew Mulk personally and is a few years younger to the late writer. An interesting point which Khushwant brings up is that of the three Indian writers who were the first to be published in England, i.e. Mulk Raj Anand, R.K.Narayan and Raja Rao, Rao was the only one who managed to get his work published without any literary sugar daddy. Graham Greene was Narayan's guardian as he entered the world of published authors and the Bloomsbury Group esp. T.S.Eliot were Mulk's literary caretakers. Khushwant also mentions charges of plagiarism against Mulk when he wrote an essay on Indian erotica and was accused of lifting from a German magazine. I am still waiting for Khushwant's obituary of Raja Rao.
