Enjoyed reading this one.
I tend to so agree with what the Colonel thinks in your story, Ramesh thought of his neighbours who were financially much better off than him but who lived such disorderly lives....

Hi Sujatha. If your Dad was in the Indian Air Force or the Royal Indian Air Force as it was known then, in the forties then he must be having a lot of stories of those days. See if you can record them. And see if you can find any photographs of those days. These would be invaluable today. My father had also joined the Army in the forties. Just listening to him talk about those days is fascinating as it opens a window to that era.

Hi sujatha
this was the first you read about the mukti bahini? how time changes... they were trained by the indian army to fight the pakistani army which murdered hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians in East Pakistan (as Bangladesh was then known as) I was a young school kid then and what I had read in the papers had traumatised me a lot.... how about writing about some tales your dad told you... and please dont call me Sir  the unwritten rule of the blogging world is : first names only... regards...

The old man’s sixth sense worked well. He escaped assault and death once. But finally the Retired Colonel and his wife met the ill-fate.

It was more like reading the ‘City’ section of the daily newspaper with news of stabbing & killing of old couples by their domestic helps or aides.

It is good that children do well and are able to settle in a place of their choice, within their own country or abroad. But leaving old aged parents behind, to get murdered by those kept for their help and well being (read servants, maids, aides, drivers, etc) is a sad and sorry fact.

Old Age Homes where people can pay and live, according to their financial status, are a good option. Many NGOs in Delhi have started such projects. They give old couples the choice of choosing a paid accommodation, according to their need, desire or financial position. The package includes 24-hour medical help, nutritious food, hygienic and clean-green environment, safety and security, and company of people their age.

I have met a number of couples who have opted to live in one such Home, despite the fact that their children were in the same city. It gives them the freedom to live life at their pace, as they choose, and indulge in activities they liked, without the fear of being assaulted or being killed. NRI children of the old couples take a sigh of relief that their parents, not willing to leave the country to live with them, are safe, and would be taken care of well in such Homes.

Mr DVK, you deserve applause for addressing a social issue through a well-written story.

Children of such ailing and old aged couples need to learn a lesson.

Once gone, we would get to see our parents only in photo frames and family albums. We would forever miss their love, care, and protection. However old we get, however wide our circle of friends and acquaintances, however well we lead our lives -- full of all physical comforts and financial security, with a loving spouse and kids -- parental love and affection is unparalleled.

We must feel blessed to have our parents alive.
And by taking care of them, as much as we can, we should try getting drenched in their constantly flowing love, till death does us apart.
