Nature Note From Mhow: The Coppersmith Barbet Goes 'Tuk, Tuk, Tuk...'
The Coppersmith Barbet is such a beautiful bird. And this is the second year in succession that I have seen it choosing a rotten branch of the drumstick tree to peck and make a nest in. The nest it has made this year is in the leftover portion of the branch it had chosen last year. And the manner in which it goes 'Tuk, tuk, tuk...' is so reminiscent of a coppersmith. Hence its name. A beautiful bird I had mistakenly thought is a woodpecker till our fellow blogger Bunty corrected the mistake.
Taxonomic Name: Megalaima haemacephala
Also known as the Crimson Breasted Barbet
Thanks to: My mother who called me, "Come quickly and see this beautiful bird." All pictures except the first taken through the kitchen window or through my bedroom window.I shot a video too but it takes so long to upload I will do it some other day.

Hi Melody thanks for your visit and comment. it is indeed a beautiful bird... it was only when I read about this bird that I learnt that it chooses a rotten branch to peck a hole ... hence the (dead and rotten) drumstick branch... Regards... Dev

These pictures ARE beautiful. I mean the bird is beautiful LOL. The close-up shots are really great. Great balancing act by the bird, sitting vertically on the trunk! But drumstick tree is a strange choice to build a nest. As far as I know, the trunk isn't very thick, but it has still managed to peck a hole...
Thanks for sharing.
