Nature Note From Mhow: Images of a Red Wattled Lapwing
Taxonomic Name: Vanellus indicus
Also known as Titeri in Hindi. Tamil: Alkati, Sindhi:Tateehar, Gujarati: Titodi, Kashmiri: Hatatut,
It has a characteristic cry: Did You Do It? It asks.... and sometimes it asks: Did You Really Do It?
I have often seen its eggs not far from this spot where I took these snaps. It does not build a nest. All it does is to find a hollow, safe spot in the ground. The eggs are well camouflaged and one can easily step on them if one is not alert. Many years ago (during the mid nineties) a lapwing had laid eggs in a secluded corner of our compound. But I could not check whether they hatched as I had left town on a trekking holiday. It did not come back after that.
