Nature Note From Mhow: The Gul Mohur - A Flamboyant Tree

Taxonomic Name: Delonix Regia 

Common Names:

English: Royal Poinciana, Flamboyant, Flame of the Forest, Peacock Flower

Hindi: Gul Mohur. Possibly because Gul = Red (from Gulab or Rose) and Mohur = Mor = Peacock.

Bengali: Krishnachur

Spanish: Arbol de Fuego (Tree of Fire) 

In Costa Rica and Central America it is also known as Malinche after a maid of the same name.   

According to Pradip Krishen (Trees of Delhi: A Field Guide) the Gul Mohur is native to Madagascar and the earliest records of this species in India are from Sewree near Mumbai in 1840.
