Nature Note From Mhow: This Baby Python Was Unlucky...
Archana, my friend Anurag's wife, rang me early today morning and told me that they were witnessing the rare sight of a Krait which had killed a baby python and was trying to eat it. She asked me whether I wanted to come over to their farmhouse with my camera and record the event. I didnt need a second invitation. I rushed over. But when I reached the farm Anurag told me that the krait had vanished. He had captured a video of the krait trying to eat the python.
The baby python was in the biomass used as a mulch in a bed of brinjal plants. It still had some life in it when I clicked the initial pictures. But it had almost certainly died by the time I clicked the last of the pictures you can see below.
We left it at the same spot and went to have a cup of tea. When we returned it was not there anymore. In all probability one of the crows we saw flying around may have taken it away.
A sad event. The baby python may have grown into a fascinating adult if it wasn't unlucky today. But then thats nature. Death is as much a part of it as birth. And the young of most fauna are vulnerbale.
