A few days before World Environment Day I happen to see a group of married women worshipping a banyan tree. It is a beautiful sight. Luckily, I am carrying my camera and the ladies do not object to my presence.

On June 5, World Environment Day I head towards Indore in the early morning to attend a function at the Sirpur Lake. As we are leaving Mhow I see this huge tamarind tree which has been chopped down. It is a sad sight. The tree is beautiful even in its death.

A few kilometres ahead I see many more trees which have been uprooted. The Agra Mumbai road is being widened into a four lane highway and a bypass is being built. All along the new stretch trees have been uprooted. Nature lovers in Indore claim that at least a quarter of these sacrificial victims to progress could have been transplanted.
