Through the Webscape section of the program Click on BBC which is presented by Kate Russell I came to know about a site where you play a word game and at the same time contribute to a worthy cause. For every right answer you make in the game 20 grains of rice are donated to the poor through the United Nations World Food Programme. This is what Kate has to say about this game:

" The idea is you have to state the meaning of a word from a multiple choice of four. For every word you get right, the site will donate 20 grains of rice through the UN World Food programme.

You can see the donation piling up on the right and can play for as long as you like.

So if you know your cognomen from your glissade and have a few minutes to spare, why not do some good? Okay, so 20 grains of rice is not a lot, but it all adds up you know. "

Here is the website url in case you want to play and contribute a few grains.

happy playing

p.s. My contribution after two sessions, a short one and a very long one, is 3620 grains.

Note added on 18 June: According to the free rice website 48 grains of rice make one gram. Therefore, according to my calculations, to contribute one kilogram of rice one has to generate a donation of 48000 grains i.e one has to get 2400 correct answers. Not an easy task. But one would have improved one's vocabulary by the time one donated a kilogram of rice.

As per the website the total donation till today due to correct answers is 36,892,194,250 grains. This according to my calculations works out to 768 587 380 grams or 768,587 kgs and 380 grams. Which can also be 768.5 tons. An impressive quantity indeed. And all the result of visitors to the site playing a vocabulary building game.
